Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. held a “METAL GEAR 25th ANNIVERSARY” event near the company’s headquarters in Tokyo Midtown (Minato Ward, Tokyo) on Thursday, August 30th, to commemorate the twenty-five years of the METAL GEAR series.
The METAL GEAR series pioneered the stealth game genre with the release of the original “METAL GEAR” in 1987, which encouraged players to avoid confrontations during their solo infiltration into enemy territory. The series is also known for its recurring anti-war and anti-nuclear armament themes. Its rich story and movie-quality action have attracted wide popularity both domestically and overseas, with over 32.4 million* games sold worldwide.
As the event got underway, Konami Digital Entertainment President Fumiaki Tanaka took to the stage to greet attendees and give thanks to all the many fans and staff members who have supported the series over these long years. Following Mr. Tanaka’s greeting, Executive Vice President, Kojima Productions Director and father to the METAL GEAR series Hideo Kojima welcomed attendees to the event, and then took the opportunity to both reminisce about the series’ twenty-five years up until the present and speak of his aspirations for the leaps and bounds the series will take in the future, plus his passion toward creating new entertainment.
Mr. Kojima also introduced the series’ first ever social media content, “METAL GEAR SOLID SOCIAL OPS,” talked about the series becoming a live-action Hollywood movie, and showed off new footage from “METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE,” the new title that brings an all-new METAL GEAR feel to the series with its focus on exhilarating action. Furthermore, the new game engine currently under development, “FOX ENGINE,” got its first unveiling worldwide in a live demonstration of “METAL GEAR.”
Konami Digital Entertainment will continue to deliver the thrills of the METAL GEAR series to customers around the world.
