KONAMI's music video game, DanceDanceRevolution (hereafter: DDR)*1 is fast becoming a popular way to maintain and boost health in America's battle against the bulge. According to research results announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in America, only 34.7%*2 of children in America get the recommended levels of exercise. America has been in need of effective measures to battle the growing social issue of childhood obesity.
Efforts to keep fit and improve health in America by utilizing DDR began with a joint initiative between KONAMI and the State of West Virginia launched in 2005. The following year, KONAMI and the State of West Virginia collaborated to introduce DDR to physical education and health-related classes in all public schools in West Virginia (765 schools). Children who played DDR were found to exercise more, making the game an important part of maintaining and increasing health.
KONAMI sponsors the DanceDanceRevolution West Virginia State Championship Tournament in which over 10,000 students from the state participate. The tournament finals were held at the governor's mansion on Thursday, June 17th (in America).

In addition, in April this year KONAMI formed a partnership with the National Association for Sport Physical Education (NASPE), an organization consisting of teachers, coaches, and researchers involved in physical education in America that aims to promote better awareness of physical education and improved curriculum. The alliance helps raise the quality of physical education programs by offering DDR in schools selected from the best physical education programs in America to be part of NASPE STARS.
Moreover, since 2008 KONAMI has participated in the “2010 California Governor's Fitness Challenge” promoted by the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. During the event, children compete by being physically active during a specified period. Over 1.27 million California students are registered for the competition. KONAMI is contributing to the efforts to fight obesity in American children in a variety of ways, such as by donating DDR to the top 100 schools that make it to the finals.
KONAMI will continue to actively cooperate in initiatives to maintain and enhance health by utilizing DDR.
*1 DDR is a music video game that appeared in game centers in 1998. After a home version was released, it became, and continues to be, one of KONAMI’s most successful music video games. The straightforward game challenges players to step on direction arrows as instructed on screen in time to music. It has captured the interest of consumers around the world of many ages. In addition, because the entire body is used to play DDR, the enjoyment level of the music game is heightened. A calorie counter has been added that tracks the number of calories burned while playing to help players keep fit and boost their health.
