*1 The METAL GEAR series established the now-familiar "stealth action" game genre, in which players are encouraged to avoid unnecessary combat as they complete their mission, and since its very first title went on sale in 1987, the series’ rich story and cinematic cutscenes have won tremendously high acclaim both domestically and overseas. The series has sold a total 35.4 million copies worldwide. (current as of June 2013).
